SCLT Presentation to Neighbourhood Watch in Uphill (UK)
Thursday 6th June 2013 saw SCLT Trustee Ash Jones visiting a meeting of the highly respected Uphill Neighbourhood Watch Group in North Somerset (UK) which was held at the Victory Hall Community Centre, to give a themed presentation on older adult crime and avoiding scams & deceptions to the mini-conference of scheme co-ordinators.
The Uphill Neighbourhood Watch Scheme incorporates over 800 addresses in the costal village of Uphill, a large proportion of whom are older adults who have retired to the area for the relaxed lifestyle and picturesque views over the Severn Estuary. The members of the Uphill scheme also benefit from regular crime updates from the local police and meetings where guest speakers attend to share crime related advice and information.
On his recent visit, Ash Jones introduced the members to the ground-breaking work of the all-volunteer Senior Citizen Liaison Team (SCLT) and discussed tactics which can be used to reduce the likelihood of residents becoming victims of doorstep crime. He also shared some useful tips on how to avoid mail and telephone scammers, by registering with the telephone and mail preference services.
Ash Jones commented; "It is always a pleasure to visit a vibrant and thriving neighbourhood watch meeting, particularly one which is run by dedicated volunteers like Liam Doyle and his team at Uphill. I hope that my presentation will help the members consider the dangers of doorstep crime and foresee how small preventative steps, such as allways using a safety chain when answering the front door, could help senior residents win the battle of the doorstep"
As ever, all attendees to the meeting were given copies of the award-winning Senior Siren newsletter and other literature on crime prevention and personal safety ~ If your community group would like a visit from a member of the SCLT, get in touch by clicking the 'Contact Us' tab at the top of this webpage
