SCLT Visit the Annual Senior Link Festival
Senior Community Link in North Somerset (UK) is a county-wide body of local groups, made up of older adults, who come together once a month to discuss the issues facing older people in the area. The meetings also enjoy visits from guest speakers on a variety of subjects, as well as an opportunity to socialise with other like-minded individuals who want to contribute to the community.
Participants raise concerns and pose questions about local services and have regular meetings with local councillors to discuss their concerns and make suggestions to ensure that the views of the senior population are considered in local decision-making.
Wednesday 9th October saw the annual Senior Community Link Festival being staged in the enigmatic Winter Gardens complex on the seafront at Weston-super-Mare. The event featured many stalls and presentations by organisations which represent and support older adult living, as well as a number of demonstations by senior groups in such disciplines as Tai Chi, art, sign language and computer skills.
Volunteer Ash Jones represented the Senior Citizen Liaison Team at the event, joining forces with colleagues from the Avon & Somerset Police at their safety stall. Ash distributed copies of the very latest edition of the award-winning Senior Siren magazine, as well as giving lots of crime busting advice to visitors to the safety stall, he said, "I think this has been the most vibrant event I have been to this year, with hundreds and hundreds of visitors who stripped me bare of every copy of the Senior Siren that I had. I just hope the advice we have given will help people stay safe and secure in the coming winter months"
