SCLT Public Presentation Team Visit Llyswen Seniors Group

Wednesday 8th November 2017 has seen SCLT volunteer Lee Garrett attending the regular meeting of the Llyswen Seniors Group at the village Hall in the picturesque Powys village of Llyswen situated on the banks of the River Wye in Powys. The group meet regularly to keep abreast of local affairs, to enjoy guest speakers and to enjoy each others company over a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Lee joined the meeting as the guest speaker for the session and used the opportunity to discuss the ways that elder citizens can remain safe while making the most of the benefits of the internet and also how to stay safe at home, where elders may face risks from bogus callers, postal scams and even rogue traders. The presentation focused upon heightening awareness of the frequent scams that are reported to the authorities and ways to stay safe from frauds, such as by using a call guardian service on the telephone, or simply by fitting a chain or spyhole to your front door (and remembering to use it everytime the doorbell rings).

At the conclusion of his visit, Lee commented, “Having the opportunity to help our senior residents feel safe and secure in their homes is a real privilage. I really enjoy getting out and about to engage with groups, such as this vibrant group in Llyswen. These meetings are a great way of staying connected to friends and neighbours in later life and certainly help overcome the feelings of lonliness and isolation that can occur in rural locations and particularly in one’s twilight years”.
