SENIOR STAR AWARD RECIPIENT - Mr Steve Bartley

Veteran ‘Protector’ Recognised for Safeguarding the Elderly Community

The Senior Star Award was established by the Management Board of the Senior Citizen Liaison Team (SCLT) in April 2013 to recognise the efforts of citizens who go above and beyond in the service of the older adult community. The deeds recognised can vary from sustained dedication to projects which benefit the elder population, or, as in the case of some recipients, a single act of self-sacrifice or outstanding bravery.

The nominees for the award are assessed by a panel of charity trustees, lay-volunteers and former winners, to ensure that only the most deserving of candidates receive the increasingly prestigious accolade. The Senior Star Award remains one of the very few recognition processes that exists within the United Kingdom to celebrate individuals and groups, who go beyond the call of duty in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the older adult community.

The recipient of the latest Senior Star Award is Mr Steve Bartley, who is the Safeguarding and Access to Justice Programme Lead for the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales and works at the Commissioner’s office in Cardiff Bay. Steve has been involved in the provision of innovative, protective services for the vulnerable senior community for many years. Recently, Steve has spearheaded many public campaigns to raise awareness around domestic and sexual violence in later life and how professionals can help safeguard the ‘silent’ victims in every local community.

Aside from the development of policies, guidance and training on adult safeguarding in Wales, Steve spends a lot of his time liaising with the strategic leaders of the various statutory organisations who support elder citizens in Wales and beyond, he regularly delivers specialised training to police officers, social workers and other professionals and volunteers, to ensure they are better prepared to spot safeguarding concerns and know how to signpost their concerns to the appropriate authority.

In an informal and friendly ceremony at a waterfront restaurant in Cardiff Bay, near the offices of the Older Persons Commissioner for Wales, Steve was invested with the Senior Star Award trophy at a celebratory luncheon, which was attended by a number of trustees and volunteers from the Senior Citizen Liaison Team Charity.

SCLT Charity Trustee for Wales, Mr. Jon Williams, visited Cardiff Bay to bestow the SCLT Senior Star Award trophy upon Steve, he said; "It is my absolute pleasure and honour to present the prestigious Senior Star Award to Mr Steve Bartley on this wonderful celebration of his work to protect the older adult community of Wales.

It is particularly special for me, as I have personally worked alongside Steve on many occasions in the delivery of safeguarding training to many professionals and I have seen first-hand the tremendous passion and dedication he has brought to his role. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient of this accolade”

Long-standing SCLT Volunteer Ash Jones also attended the award investiture event and stated, “Steve has been a ‘protector’ for almost all of his professional life, initially as a police officer, then within social services and now with the Older Person’s Commissioner for Wales.

He is a key influencer in ensuring our precious elder community are able to enjoy their twilight years in peace, dignity and safety and it has been a privilege for me to be here today to witness the Senior Star Award being presented to him in recognition of his efforts. As a charity volunteer, I am inspired by people like Steve, who have blazed a trail to highlight the victims in our communities who are unable to speak-up about their plight because of devastating personal circumstances. The world is definitely a better place thanks to Steve Bartley …..what more can be said!”
