Coffee Pot Cafe Recognised for Elder Focussed Service
In April 2013, the Senior Star Award was created by the Management Board of the Senior Citizen Liaison Team (SCLT) to recognise the efforts of citizens who go above and beyond in the service of the older adult community. The deeds recognised can vary from sustained dedication to projects which benefit the elder population, or, as in the case of the inaugural recipient, a single act of self-sacrifice or outstanding bravery.
The Coffee Pot Cafe in Nevill Street, Abergavenny, was nominated by members of the local commuity, who wished to highlight the excellent service for elderly customers, which is routinely provided by all members of staff from the Coffee Pot. Singled out for specific mention in the nomination, were the proprietors of the town centre refreshment venue, Mr Bryan Harris and Ms Laura Masson, who have been running the cafe for the last 2-years.
In an informal and friendly ceremony at the Coffee Pot Cafe on Wednesday 21st March 2018, the Senior Star Award was officially bestowed upon Bryan and Laura and all the members of staff, who work so hard to make the cafe the succes it is, by Mr Kevin Thomas, the High Sheriff of Gwent, whilst a number of local dignitaries and members of the public and press witnessed the special moment for the Coffee Pot.
It was was noted by the judging panel, that the staff of the Coffee Pot always make time to engage with their most vulnerable customers, particularly those with additional needs, such as health and mobility issues, or perhaps those suffering from loneliness and isolation. On an unannounced evaluation visit to the venue, a member of the panel witnessed staff making time to chat to single customers, helping others with their shopping and simply helping others find a seat in the busy cafe and assisting in mobility and takingoff/putting-on their winter coats.
SCLT Charity Trustee, Mr. Ashley Jones, visited the Coffee Pot Cafe to witness the High Sheriff of Gwent bestow the SCLT Senior Star Award trophy upon the very excited team, he said; "It brings me enormous delight to be present at this ceremony today and to see the looks on the faces of the staff of the Coffee Pot Cafe as they were made aware of the wonderful things that were presented to the judging panel by the people who nominated them for this prestigious award. The Coffee Pot has been described as a 'sanctuary of smiling faces in Abergavenny', where everyone, but especially the senior members of the town, can feel embraced by the warmth of the staff.
